About Hydranest

HydraNest is a non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling the devastating effects of drought on wildlife in sub-Saharan Africa. We believe in the power of innovative, nature-inspired solutions to create a sustainable future where both wildlife and ecosystems can thrive.

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop and implement sustainable water solutions for drought-stricken regions, focusing on the needs of elephants and other vulnerable wildlife. By drawing inspiration from nature's ingenuity, we aim to:

  • Reduce wildlife deaths and human-wildlife conflict caused by water scarcity.

  • Foster biodiversity and support the health of fragile ecosystems.

  • Empower local communities to participate in conservation efforts.

Our Inspiration

Objectives

Just as the Strelitzia flower opens its petals to reveal pollen when a bird lands on its perch, our reservoir will provide a reliable source of clean water, activated by the weight of animals.

Strelitzia Flower or Bird of Paradise Flower

At the heart of our approach lies biomimicry – the practice of learning from and emulating nature's time-tested designs. Our flagship project, the HydraNest Water Reservoir, takes inspiration from the remarkable Strelitzia reginae flower (Bird of Paradise

The Biological Strategy

This innovative system aims to:

  • Harvest rainwater and minimize evaporation.

  • Provide clean and accessible water for a range of wildlife, including elephants.

  • Operate without external power sources, making it ideal for remote locations.
