About HydraNest

HydraNest is a non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling the devastating effects of drought on wildlife in sub-Saharan Africa.

Climate change has resulted in more severe dry seasons in countries such as Zimbabwe, with increasing temperatures and sporadic, unpredictable rainfall. This has resulted in:

Increased wildlife deaths - caused by dried up watering holes, which are not refilling as they once did
Increased human-wildlife conflict - as animals venture into communal areas in search of alternative water supplies.

HydraNest aims to mitigate these issues by providing alternative sources of drinking water for wildlife in arid regions. At the heart of our approach lies BIOMIMICRY.

What is BIOMIMICRY?

Biomimicry is a practice that seeks inspiration from nature’s forms, processes, and systems to create sustainable human designs. By emulating the time-tested strategies of life’s 3.8 billion years of evolution, biomimicry aims to create harmony between human innovation and the natural world. One well-known example is Velcro, which was inspired by the way burrs stick to animal fur using tiny hooked structures. Other examples include wind turbine blades designed like whale fins for greater efficiency, and self-cleaning surfaces modeled after lotus leaves.

HydraNest believes in the power of innovative, nature-inspired solutions to create a future where wildlife, ecosystems and communities can thrive. Our flagship project, the HydraNest water reservoir, takes inspiration from the remarkable Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise flower), shown above. Learn more about this in the Projects section.

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop and implement sustainable water solutions for arid regions, focusing on the needs of vulnerable wildlife, from birds, to warthogs, to elephants. By drawing inspiration from nature's ingenuity, we aim to:

Reduce wildlife deaths and human-wildlife conflict caused by water scarcity.
Foster biodiversity and support the health of fragile ecosystems.
Educate & Empower local communities to participate in conservation efforts.
